Japantown Senior-Youth Center

Project Name:

JAPANTOWN SENIOR-YOUTH CENTER

Program:

New 16,000 s.f. community center in San Jose’s Japantown.

Description:

This unique shared-use facility for seniors and youth features a wellness center, conference and classroom space, gymnasium, and dance facilities.

The building anchors a gateway intersection in Japantown and reinforces what is currently a poorly-defined urban edge. The kitchen and lobby both open up to a south and east-facing courtyard, where the clients will practice tai chi in the morning and hold events in the afternoon shade. The compact parking arrangement preserves a large portion of the site as a grassy playing field for youth sports.
